Beaulieu first Australian carpet mill to achieve

Beaulieu of Australia has produced the first carpets manufactured in Australia to achieve Green Label Plus certification under the U.S. Carpet & Rug Institute's environmental testing program.

"We were absolutely delighted to get the call from Carroll Turner at CRI advising us that our high density Antron Lumena® products Tapis ESD^® and Confetti ESD^® featuring our own environmental MediBac^® and EcoBac^® backing systems had become the first Australian made carpets to achieve this coveted environmental benchmark.

This follows closely on the heels of the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) recognizing Beaulieu of Australia for its leadership in Industrial Eco-Efficiency at the Sustainable Industries Awards 2006.

We have now achieved the enviable environmental double - the most Eco-Efficient carpet manufacturing operation in Australia coupled with being the first Australian carpet mill to achieve the prestigious Green Label Plus certification for our carpets."

Beaulieu recognised at EPA Sustainability Awards

Beaulieu of Australia was recognised for its Leadership and Innovation in Business Sustainability at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sustainable Industries Awards held in Brisbane, Australia on Monday May 15th 2006. Beaulieu was one of just 4 finalists, and the only Textile Manufacturer selected for the Industrial Eco-Efficiency Award from a field of over 100 manufacturing organisations.

Beaulieu's Manager of Environmentally Sustainable Design, Michael Kane said he was delighted that the vision and dedication of the Beaulieu's Team led by Managing Director Bob Vos and Manufacturing Manager Wayne Bankier in establishing the most Eco Efficient Carpet Manufacturing operation in Australia in just 3 short years has been duly recognised.

The Beaulieu of Australia Environmentally Sustainable Design textile floor coverings programmes consist of 5 Product Groups specifically engineered to give optimum environmental outcomes and floor performance in their designated end-use applications. These are Healthcare, Education, Hospitality, Sports & Entertainment Facilities and Office accommodation.

All Beaulieu ESD textile floor coverings are manufactured in Australia at Beaulieu's "dry" mill established in 2003 at Yatala in Queensland. The eco-efficiency of Beaulieu's manufacturing exceeds world's best practice by a considerable margin.

The U.S. Carpet & Rug Institute's 2003 Sustainability Report quotes best practice water consumption at 40.3 litres/m2 of carpet produced. Beaulieu operate at <1.0 litre/m2.

Similarly with energy, world's best practice is quoted at 3,611kWh/1,000m2 of carpet produced. Beaulieu's total electricity and gas consumption is less than 1,100 kWh/1,000m2

Beaulieu have developed and built their own backing system for their ESD products using the U.S. Carpet and Rug Institute's Green Label Plus as the environmental benchmark. This has resulted in 2 impervious backing options, MediBac^® and EcoBac^®, both based on sustainable modified polymer technology.

These are combined exclusively with Solution Dyed Nylon face fibres to produce the Beaulieu ESD textile floor coverings which all meet or exceed California's Section 01350 Low Emitting Materials Criteria, the required VOC limit values for CRI Green Label Plus and in addition, Beaulieu have eliminated the following chemicals of concern - PVC, Chlorine, 4PCH, and SBR latex.

Beaulieu now an ecoBiz Partner

On Thursday 28 March 2007 the Queensland Government Environmental Protection Agency announced that Beaulieu of Australia had achieved Partner status in the prestigious ecoBiz environmental program.

ecoBiz is the EPA's signature partnership program with Queensland business and industry whereby Queensland businesses must commit to an on-going program of industrial eco-efficiency initiatives.

This commences with a six stage process including an initial baseline assessment to determine resource consumption - raw materials input, water, energy, recycling and disposal waste, greenhouse gas emissions and wastewater output. Then follows an EPA Site Survey leading to an ecoBiz action plan and finally a re-assessment of the company's performance against the initial baseline assessment.

In order to maintain the ecoBiz Partner status Beaulieu of Australia has committed to re-assess and track their eco-efficiency initiatives and improvements and detail these in an annual report to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The ecoBiz Partner agreement further underlines Beaulieu of Australia's status as Australia's premier producer of environmentally sustainable textile floor coverings. Beaulieu is the only Australian Carpet Manufacturer to achieve CRI Green Label Plus certification for Australian made carpets, is certified for use under California's Section 01350 the CHPS (Collabrative for High Performance Schools) Low Emitting Materials criteria for use in educational facilities and was the only Australian Textile Manufacturer to be recognised for its Leadership and Innovation in Business Sustainability at the EPA Sustainable Industries Awards in 2006.
