Ways to prepare your home for a more comfortable winter

Your guide to a cosier, warmer season — starting from the floor up.

When the temperature drops, most people reach for an extra blanket but the most effective warmth in your home starts underfoot. Your floors are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in winter, and one of the easiest to address. This guide walks you through how to make your home warmer this season, with a focus on flooring choices, carpet care, and the small changes that make a big difference.

Whether you’re renovating, redecorating, or simply want practical tips, there’s something here for every budget.

Why your floor is the first place to start

Heat rises, which means cold air settles at floor level. If your flooring is cold, hard, or poorly insulated, that chill works its way up through the room no matter how high you set the thermostat. It’s one of the most common winter comfort complaints, and one of the most overlooked.

Carpet acts as a natural insulator. Its fibres trap pockets of warm air and create a thermal barrier between the cold subfloor and the living space above. According to the Carpet Institute of Australia, carpet can retain up to 10 times more warmth than hard flooring surfaces like tiles or timber and uninsulated floors account for 10–20% of total heat loss from a home*.

Key benefits of carpet in winter:

Thermal insulation I Underfoot comfort I Noise reduction I Energy efficiency

Quick Tip — If you have hard floors but aren’t ready to re-carpet, a quality rug over high-traffic areas gives you most of the warmth benefit. Or if already carpeted, layer a rug over existing carpet in your coldest room for an extra thermal boost.

Choosing the right carpet for the cold

Not all carpets perform equally in winter. The pile type, fibre, and density all affect how much warmth a carpet delivers and how well it holds up over a season of heavy use.

Pile Type: Cut pile carpets have a softer surface and generally feel warmer than loop pile because the upright fibres create more surface area to trap heat. For maximum winter warmth, a medium to deep cut pile in a dense construction is the sweet spot.

For maximum bedroom warmth, our Calisse Range is our heaviest and cosiest cut-pile carpet, rated at 70oz/yd2 2,373g/m2 — delivering exceptional underfoot softness and thermal performance. It carries a 15-year warranty and is pet and allergy-friendly.

Fibre Choice: Synthetic fibres like nylon and polyester are affordable, highly durable, and comfortable underfoot. While wool is renowned for its natural insulating properties, quality nylon and polyester carpets also offer excellent warmth retention and can make a significant difference in keeping homes cosy during winter.

Quick Tip — What to Look For In-Store:  Ask about pile weight (measured in grams per square metre or oz/yd²). A heavier pile is generally denser and warmer. Ask for underlay options; this is often where the warmth upgrade happens.

Don’t Overlook the Backing and Underlay

A quality underlay does more than add cushioning underfoot — it creates an additional thermal barrier between the carpet and the subfloor, reinforcing the insulation layer and keeping warmth exactly where it matters.

Paired with Easybac®, the woven backing featured on all Beaulieu Carpets, you get a system that works even harder. Together, they help retain warmth while maintaining a cleaner, healthier environment beneath the surface, naturally resistant to mould and mildew.

Quick Tip — The higher the tog of the underlay, the better the thermal insulation (similar to duvets).  8–11mm is typical for good warmth and comfort; go thicker in bedrooms and living rooms. PU (polyurethane) foam underlays offer excellent insulation and are the most common.

Carpet care in winter — Keeping it in top condition

Winter brings mud, wet shoes, and increased indoor foot traffic, all of which take a toll on carpets. A little seasonal care goes a long way.

Quick Tip — Reducing Allergens in Winter: Regular vacuuming with a HEPA-filter vacuum and annual professional cleaning keep allergen levels in check year-round.
