Carpet care made simple: essential tips for homeowners

Great carpet care starts with just a few simple habits. Get these right, and your carpet will keep looking its best for years to come.

1. Vacuum little and often

Once or twice a week is the baseline for an average household. But high-traffic areas such as hallways, in front of the couch and the kids’ bedroom floor deserve attention every second day. Got pets or allergies at home? Daily vacuuming of busy zones makes a noticeable difference.

Why it matters: regular vacuuming is what actually protects your carpet’s lifespan, not just its looks. Not sure how often to vacuum your specific zones? Check the recommended vacuum frequency here

2. Act fast on spills

A spill treated within minutes is dramatically easier to remove than one left overnight, so don’t wait. The longer a stain sits, the more it bonds to the fibre.

  • Blot, don’t rub: Rubbing pushes a stain deeper into the fibres and can damage the pile. Instead, press a clean, dry cloth onto the spill and lift, working from the outside of the stain inward.
  • Start with cold water: For most fresh spills, cold water and a clean cloth will lift a surprising amount before you need to reach for anything else.
  • Match the cleaner to the stain. Not every spill needs the same treatment. Refer to our Care, Cleaning and Warranties Handbook

Quick tip: Spot-test a hidden area of the carpet to check colourfastness (Inside a wardrobe or under a rug).

3. For pet accidents

For homes with pets, it’s worth asking your retailer about carpets built with stain-resistant technology at the fibre level. Beaulieu ranges are engineered with Carpet Shield to help prevent liquids from penetrating deep into the carpet, buying you more time to clean up a spill before it sets, compared to untreated carpets.

Quick tip: Enzyme-based cleaners are your best friend here. For older or deeper accidents, a professional clean is usually the most reliable fix.
