Why your floor matters more than you think

Winter in Australia has a particular rhythm. The heaters come on. Windows stay shut. Humidity creeps up, the air gets heavy, and somewhere in the corners of your home, places you can’t see, things start to grow. Dust mites thrive. Mould finds its footing. And for one in nine Australians living with asthma, or the millions managing allergies, the season shift isn’t just uncomfortable. It can be genuinely difficult.

What most people don’t realise is that the floor beneath their feet plays a starring role in all of this.

The carpet question: do carpets make asthma worse?

Carpet has long been blamed for worsening allergies and asthma and that concern made sense, once. But the carpet you’re picturing and the carpet we make today are two very different things.

Modern carpet, when properly engineered, doesn’t worsen air quality; it improves it. Technologies designed to trap allergens hold dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mould spores at floor level, keeping them out of the air you breathe. Add protective barriers that repel dirt and resist mould and mildew, treatments that reduce bacterial growth, and low-emission materials, and you have a floor that actively supports a healthier indoor environment.

That’s exactly what Brease carpets are built to do. Designed with allergen-reducing technology throughout, they work with your home, not against it, so the air your family breathes is cleaner and your floors are one less thing to worry about.

Allergies affect approximately 20% (or 1 in 5) of the Australian population.

Brease, the only carpet sensitive to asthma & allergies

Beaulieu Australia’s Brease carpet collection is the only carpet approved by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice® program, meaning it has passed an independent expert panel review for its potential benefit to people with asthma and allergies. That blue butterfly on the packaging isn’t just a logo; it’s a signal that what’s beneath your feet has been designed with your health in mind.

Nearly 2.8 million people, or roughly 1 in 9 Australians, have asthma according to the National Asthma Council Australia.

5 practical tips for keeping your carpet asthma and allergy-friendly

Choosing the right carpet is just one part of creating an asthma-friendly home, but there are a few simple habits that make a real difference too. Here’s what is recommended:

  1. Vacuum weekly with a HEPA filter vacuum. Even with a high-performance carpet like Brease, regular vacuuming is essential. Use a vacuum fitted with a HEPA filter. If you have allergies or asthma, it’s worth asking someone else to do the vacuuming if possible and leaving the room for at least 20 minutes afterward. Vacuums can temporarily increase airborne allergen levels while in use.

  2. Control indoor humidity. Dust mites thrive in warm, humid conditions. Keeping indoor humidity below 50% significantly reduces their population. This means ventilating your home well, avoiding unflued gas heaters and evaporative coolers (which increase moisture), and using exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens. Good insulation, including quality carpet and underlay, helps stabilise indoor temperatures, which supports humidity control.

  3. Keep carpets dry. Never let wet items sit on carpet. They create the moisture conditions that mould and dust mites need to thrive.

  4. Plan a professional clean at least once a year. A professional steam clean once a year (or at the end of winter, when carpets have endured their heaviest season of indoor foot traffic) kills dust mite populations and removes the deep-seated allergen load that vacuuming alone leaves behind.

  5. Think about the whole room, not just the floor. Carpets work best as part of a broader allergen-management approach. Clean window coverings regularly. Use dust-mite-proof covers on mattresses and pillows. Wash bedding weekly in hot water. If you have pets, vacuum more frequently. Address any damp or ventilation issues in the home.

Why this matters right now

Cold and flu seasons put extra pressure on our immune systems. That’s the conversation we usually have. But indoor air quality is part of that picture too. When the environment we’re breathing in is cleaner, genuinely lower in bacteria, mould spores, and allergens, we’re giving ourselves a better baseline to recover from and ideally to avoid, the seasonal bugs that circulate every year.

Choosing Brease isn’t a compromise between comfort and health. It’s the option where you can have both.
